Steiermark

Wine regionAustria

Steiermark, or Styria, is a southern Austrian wine region especially associated with white wines and the distinctive Schilcher rosé tradition.

Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling and Chardonnay are important starting grapes. Chardonnay is often known locally as Morillon. The region’s three smaller origins are Südsteiermark, Vulkanland Steiermark and Weststeiermark, each giving a more precise location than the broad Styrian name.

Weststeiermark’s Schilcher is made from Blauer Wildbacher and offers a different expression from the white wines for which Styria is best known. Compare grape and origin together when exploring the region. A Sauvignon Blanc and a Welschriesling from the same producer can reveal as much as comparing different districts.
