Wachau
DAC wine regionAustria
Wachau is the terraced Danube wine region best known for dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Steep vineyard terraces overlooking the Danube are the visual signature of the Wachau. Riesling is strongly associated with rocky hillside sites, while Grüner Veltliner is also important on deeper soils. The local climate reflects the meeting of warmer eastern influences and cooler air from the western uplands.
The place name and a producer’s style terms answer different questions. Wachau gives an origin; terms used by local grower associations can add information about ripeness and weight. A fuller wine is not automatically sweeter. For a first comparison, choose one Grüner Veltliner and one Riesling from the same producer.
