Weinviertel

DAC wine regionAustria

Weinviertel is a large Lower Austrian wine region whose DAC identity centres on dry, peppery Grüner Veltliner.

Grüner Veltliner is the useful organising principle for Weinviertel DAC. The regional wine style emphasises a dry palate and the grape’s familiar peppery character. This is a large area, however, with several soil types and local growing conditions, rather than one continuous belt of identical vineyards.

The regional label helps when a shopper wants a recognisable Austrian white without learning every village name first. Look separately at alcohol, reserve wording and the producer’s description to judge weight and richness. Weinviertel is a geographical claim, while the DAC wording narrows the style that can use that origin.
